The Public Option is the Only Option (for Health Care Insurance Reform)
(Today’s Dialogue show included a pledge drive for WPFW.)
1. Public support for public option is at an astounding 83%, including 53% who strongly support it
(See Figure 3.)
This poll was not financed by any progressive groups. It was financed by large major corporations, AARP, and Blue Cross!!!! Full list: AARP, American Express, Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, Buck Consultants, Chevron, Deere & Company, IBM, Mercer, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Principal Financial Group, Schering-Plough Corp., Shell Oil Company, The Commonwealth Fund, and Towers Perrin.
So, if anything, the 83% number is LOW!
2. We have 52 solid Senate votes in support of a public option.
Why should we back down? We have the majority.
a. We may well reach 60.
b. If not, we may get 60 to block the filibuster with Dems not on board at least voting for cloture.
c. And if that all fails, we have reconciliation which requires 50.
So we will win one way or the other in the Senate.
And in the House, it’s a done deal.

As a doctor, I definitely would want the public option or a single payor system. The insurance companies should no longer hold the country hostage in order to receive health care!

Although I try to stay positive on the Public Option. And anything less than single payer would be the public option.
I see my own Sen Ben Nelson of Nebraska, (a democrat) making public statement as “something as big as this reform is, it should take a minimum of 65 votes to pass. Wow, is that some sort of super majority or what?
When you consider Old Ben was voted in with a slight majority. It is a reddish state. All othr congressmen are republican “just say NO” and follow the GOP leadership at all costs.
Remember, Ben Nelson made it possible for republicans to put in place Sam Alito to the SCOTUS by blocking filabuster and Nuke option. What a guy.
But as to the question of the Dems not passing a reform bill without a strong Public Option. If they don’t we will have Sarh Palin as President in 2012. Or Mitt Romney. Dems must know, we want the public optio, we want troops drawn down, economic stability, JOBS,JOBS, tough regulations on Wall Street as well as EFCA to food safety.
With his plate full of Bush’s leftovers the reek of stench. impatience grows.
