PATRIOT ACT UPDATE with REP. JERRY NADLER OF NEW YORK

July 12, 2004

(archived broadcast )
Republicans are determined to read your library books and your email.
You won’t want to miss this special update on the PATRIOT Act, with a very special guest, Rep. Jerry Nadler, Congressman of New York

The vote in the House was 219 to 201 to overturn this provision of the PATRIOT Act. Then the shenanigans began. As Democrats shouted, “Shame! Shame! Shame!”, the Republicans broke the rules, held the vote open past its alloted time and twisted arms to make sure that a secret court can approve a secret petition to check out what you’re doing on the Internet.

    jenny,
What I was saying is its hard to believe he was thrown in jail for one year for only having links on his website. Unknowingly he could have linked a terrorist network that the fbi/cia has been watching. So this guy making contact with them would spark some interest as he is in our country. Now after the case is over and it is decided he was not guilty he deserves to be compensated for time spent in jail. A lot of money would make me forget all about a year in jail.
You can argue the contrary…they didnt arrest this guy and he blew up a building…we had evidence that linked him to the group (all be it not much) and did nothing… Lets say on sept 10th the fbi noticed one of the hijakers communicated online with a suspicious group. They arrest him with little evidence…attack stoped…they invistigate further sept 11 happens. The system is not full proof and inocent people are going to be held but i would rather have that happen then another 3000 dead. The majority of the people this will affect will be illegals and visitors….and if they dont like that they dont have to come here.

    Jenni,
Although I know nothing about the Saudi student, I can say with absolute certainty that I believe abuse happens. Abues happens at all levels of our govt. But if the problem is abuse, why not attack the root of the problem? I think it would be beneficial to know that someone has been:
    a) checking out books on how to make bombs
    b) buying checmicals off the internet used for making bombs
    c) in consistent contact with someone in afghanistan
None of these things individually will neccesarily imply guilt, but stacked together you can create a watch list, and might prevent an attack and save thousands of lives.
The problem is that the govt will always step over the line that we the people draw for them, whatever we allow they will take it a step further. So why not have a checks and balances system while enforcing the (rewritten) patriot act?
