Thank you for helping Patrick!!!!!
I too bought into the Troubled Teen industry and sent my son to a Wilderness therapy program in Vermont. We were told the program lasted about 9 weeks. As time went by, they kept telling us he was not ready for the next “level.” They then, along with a highly paid educational consultant in Atlanta, strongly recommended he go to a therapeutic boarding school in Halifax, VA or to one of two other “therapeutic” schools in Montana. They didn’t even want him to come home even for one day – and strongly advised that he go straight into the “therapeutic” boarding school. To make a long story short, much like Susan, I began to do a lot of research, cross referencing facts, etc…..I then visited one of the four recommended schools and was appalled. On the outside and in the brochures, it looked like an Ivy League school, but we learned that it was in fact a “behavior modification” program school very similar to the Cedu programs, Cascade etc…..We hardly saw any kids because they were up in a “back building” in the woods in a “workshop.” When we asked if we could see the building, we were refused. When we asked about what goes on in the workshop, the question was side-stepped and we were offered no information. Thank God we got our son out of the wilderness program and chose not to send our son to one of these schools. I thank Heal, Astart and people like you for making this information available. I have become an advocate and will be for life.
