  Can this country finally quest again
  for greatness, for catharsis
  from its chronic historical sickness,
  or will it go deeper
  into hysterical bitching brew,
  playing cliché political cards
  at rallies where the people boo,
  oh, sweet Americana,
  you can’t take the low road
  to high ideals,
  no way to get there
  from there,
  the referendum is on the electorate,
  the selection, this election, of the nation’s consciousness
  is now on trial,
  God help us,
  keep our subscription
  to the resurrection.
