Anatomy of a Smear
(archived broadcast )
Swift Boat Veterans for “Truth” (Swift Boat Veterans for Bush) have changed their stories so many times that it takes time and detail to go through each of the men and show each to be a liar. We will do that on today’s INSIDE SCOOP. Many of these lies were made under oath (ironically, the reason the Republicans say they impeached Bill Clinton). Bush still refuses to disavow the ads.
Lies + Cash = Smear
Throughout his Presidency, the handlers of George W. Bush have consistently hired, promoted, and praised those that lied, exaggerated, or misled on his behalf and fired those that told Americans the truth. Deception has become virtually a prerequisite for work in this Administration. (Myriad examples include not just false reports on Iraqi nukes and Bin Laden/Saddam collaboration but also on the Medicare bill, the Nigerian lie/Wilson smear, Bush’s faith-based initiative, Enron, etc.)
Adolph Hitler — an expert on pathological lying — understood that the best way for a liar to change the focus from his own lies is to smear someone else with a “colossal untruth” so big that no one dare believe it to be untrue. Bush used this tactic against John McCain — his associates called McCain a KGB agent — and is now trying it against John Kerry. (See below to read Adolph Hitler’s writings on the art of lying.)
What is the motivation of these men to lie, in some cases under oath? Some of these men freely admit they are angered by Kerry’s advocacy to end the Vietnam War. Others serve the Bush campaign.
And who is funding the ads? Close associates of George W. Bush and Karl Rove who stand to gain financially and otherwise if these lies are believed. The Bush Campaign frequently supports groups like these — indirectly through “business associates” — so as to have “plausible deniability.”
For the Bush Administration, “big lies” — better described as purposeful deceit, intentional misleading, or propaganda — are routine, pervasive, and the ordinary manner of communicating with the American People so as to conceal the handover of hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars to Bush associates.
Thus the Swift Boat Smear is just a small example of everyday business in what may well be the most deceptive and secret Administration in American history. The President knows the American People reject his policies. His only hope for election or re-selection is to get enough people to distrust John Kerry that he gets a close vote, one close enough to rig the election again.
The following is an unedited quotation from Adolph Hitler in his book Mein Kampf (Murphy translation, page 134)
“… in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes.”
